West Virginia to Redefine Marriage W.Va. Votes To Ban Same-Sex Marriage FindLaw News The West Virginia Legislature voted Saturday to ban homosexual marriages and prohibit the state from recognizing such marriages performed in other states. On the last day of the 60-day legislative session, the House approved the measure 96-3 and sent it to the governor for his signature. The Senate previously passed it unanimously. Gov. Cecil Underwood introduced the ban, so his agreement is expected. The bill would allow marriage licenses to be issued only to couples consisting of a man and a woman. http://news.findlaw.com/News/s/20000313/wvgaymarriage.html

The two young children of Yaron and Efrat Ungar are the lead plaintiffs in the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Rhode Island. They are seeking $250 million from the defendants under a law that gives U.S. courts jurisdiction over claims resulting from acts of terrorism against U.S. citizens abroad. http://news.findlaw.com/News/s/20000313/usaarafat.html

It's not the schools, it's the children that count 2 Schools in Florida Adjust as Vouchers Change Classrooms New York Times When Florida Gov. Jeb Bush initiated the nation's boldest voucher experiment last year, it was clear that its fate would depend on two things: the progress of the students using taxpayer money for private-school tuition and the impact on the struggling schools they left behind. In the debate roiling American cities over whether vouchers are the greatest threat to public schools or the best hope to solve the problems that plague them, the more vexing issues arise at two elementary schools here in an impoverished corner of the Florida Panhandle. http://www.nytimes.com/library/national/031400voucher-edu.html

Stiffed by the long arm of the law Federal judge finds law extends to non-Americans who attack U.S. nationals abroad CNN A federal judge ruled Monday that U.S. prosecutors did not reach beyond their authority by charging Osama bin Laden and 16 others in the bombing of two U.S. embassies in Africa. Lawyers for six men charged in the case had argued that U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White sought an unprecedented expansion of federal jurisdiction over crimes allegedly committed in other countries. http://www.cnn.com/2000/US/03/14/embassybombings.ap/index.html

Can you evict someone with diplomatic immunity? Diplomat Says Landlords Won't Rent to Him Reuters/Excite! News An Iraqi U.N. diplomat says he has been living in a hotel for the past nine months because real estate agents in New York refuse to rent apartments to diplomats, especially Iraqis. "We have experienced clear-cut discrimination toward our mission, and that has created very great problems for us to find proper accommodations for members of the Iraqi delegation," diplomat Abdul Munim al-Kadhe said. http://news.excite.com/news/r/000313/11/odd-apartments

Better check the sofa cushions for loose change Conviction overturned after 'stolen money' found in bank vault Detroit News A Jackson restaurant employee's conviction last year of stealing a missing deposit bag containing $2,289.20 was overturned after the bag was found. According to bank employees, what Robert Farnsworth Jr. said happened to a missing deposit bag was "absolutely impossible." More than six months after Farnsworth's conviction, Michael George was also missing a night deposit from his car wash business. He knew Comerica president Rick Davies, and asked him to help track down his missing $1,825 deposit. So on Feb. 28, technicians opened the night drop and found three deposit bags that had gotten stuck in the vault's mechanism -- something bank employees said at Farnsworth's trial was not possible. http://www.detnews.com/2000/metro/0003/11/03110094.htm
